Why are the Laborers Few? Part 1: “I Don’t Want to ‘Beg’ for Money”

It both pains me and brings me joy to say that more people are asking me to teach them the Bible than I have time to teach. I am a Bible translator in title and yet I am also teaching literacy, evangelism, discipleship, and caring for physical needs. I love my job, but I am tired. Every missionary I know would say the same thing. There is simply so much kingdom work to do on the field and not enough people to do it. Why is that? Why are missionaries pulled so thin? In a word, it is because we…

God has Provided a 7th Grade Homeschool Teacher, Already but Not Yet…

It is hard to believe that we are on the homestretch of homeschooling our children. The Lord has provided 6 different committed, godly young women to come homeschool our kids throughout our time on the field and this coming school year will be our last year of homeschooling our kids. After this year, we will be in the States for 8th grade, and then the kids will be in high school in the capital. The Lord has once again provided someone who is willing to spend a year with our family, making children do their math, and experiencing the discomforts…

We’re Not Lone Rangers

I think that many Christians have a false idea of missionaries: namely, that they want to go off on their own and do ministry by themselves. Often we think of David Livingstone who literally disappeared into Africa to do his work and was hardly ever heard from the last six years of his life. In fact, a newspaper had to send a large party led by Henry Morton Stanley to find him. As far as I can tell, Livingstone liked this way of life. He was the quintessential lone ranger missionary. But is this normative? Should we send out our…

3 Reasons I Am Thankful for Support Raising

Forever and always people have avoided going into missions because they have to raise support. Just recently I saw a thread where men with PhDs in biblical studies were lamenting the lack of employment opportunities in American Bible schools and seminaries. Someone commented on the thread saying, “There are plenty of opportunities overseas.” One of the few responses to this was (paraphrased), “Yeah, but then you will have to be raising support for your entire life!” I understand the hesitancy to raise support. Stacey and I drove all around the country in 2011 speaking to churches, friends, and (at times)…

When You Have to End Support

One reality of the missionary life is that missionaries will lose supporters. According to Ask A Missionary, most missionaries lose 5-15% of their support during their first two years on the field. It is very likely, then, that some of our readers will have to discontinue support at sometime. There are various reasons that you might want to stop supporting a missionary: financial problems, loss of a job, or a realization that you do not want to support their ministry any longer maybe due to theological or methodological convictions. Whatever the reason, I thought that I would offer some suggestions…

Closed Doors or Hurdles? Hope for the Aspiring Missionary (like me).

By Dave If you have read our most recent newsletter, you know that upon arriving in France we realized that the school that we chose is not going to work out. I have to admit, it was pretty bewildering. I mean, we found cheap plane tickets, got our visas on time, received a free ride to the airport, survived 12 hours in the air with four young children, all of our bags made it to France…and the school is closing and cannot offer the hours they promised. How does that happen? You might think we should be discouraged. And to…

Wow, I am just beyond excited as I write this blog entry.  Since just LAST NIGHT Richie has raised the remaining $1,200 that he needed in order to take his vision trip to Cameroon.  He is fully funded and buying plane tickets and soon will be packing his bags. Here are a couple reasons why this is so thrilling: Because Richie will have the opportunity to go to Cameroon and hopefully see all the ways he can be used in the Lord’s Kingdom.  Lord willing, he’ll come back with a head full of dreams of how he could best serve…

9 Days to get Richie to Cameroon-Help!

When people ask us how they can pray for us in our missions endeavors, our typical response is, “Pray that the Lord will raise up co-workers.”  Why is this so important to us?  The reason is because we are pioneering a new people group currently with just Dave and Stacey Hare and 4 young kiddos.  Not only do we want to live, home-school the kids, teach literacy, and translate the Bible, but we ALSO want to take the Bible to the streets and see it infiltrate the culture.  Put simply, this is way too much for just us to do! …
