The Less Than Romantic Realities of Village Life

For various reasons throughout my life I have heard people talking about the virtues of “village life.” I generally do not say much on these subjects, as they tend to be a bit touchy, and to be honest, I did not have a lot to say. However, I realized that after living for a while in an African village, I can offer some facts regarding village life that most people would not know. My goal is not confrontation in this blog, but just information. As you are making decisions regarding your family, raising your kids, and how you counsel others,…

Minority People Groups will Rule the World

“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the Kingdom of God.” – Luke 6:20-26 We have at times been asked (and wondered ourselves) why we would choose to work with a minority people group when we could work with those who would be more likely to have a world-wide impact. The thinking is that if a Bakoum person comes to know Christ, he may be instrumental for the Kingdom among those who are in his village, but he will likely never travel nor write anything that could influence the masses. Conversely, if those who speak languages of wider communication…

There is so Little Grace Here

by Stacey  Save, O LORD, for the godly one is gone; for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man. – Psalm 12:1  Streets Filled with Violence I was studying one day when I  heard a young woman screaming in the street, “No mama, no mama.” I went outside to see what was going on and Dave told me that our neighbor was violently whipping her daughter with an electrical cable, even in the face, while her older brother was pinning her down. Dave told the mother that she needed to stop and with much frustration, she eventually relented….

21 Baka People Converted and Baptized!

“Has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?” James 2:5 World Team missionaries have been laboring among the Baka for decades and, after much prayer and teaching, the Lord has blessed them by letting them see the fruit of their labors.  When Dave and I visited Cameroon over a year ago, we had the joy of visiting with the Baka people when a man came to Christ.  Since then, the Lord has saved many many more.  As of…

From the Mouths of the National Translators

To give a little background, World Team Bible translators have gone into a group of people called the Oroko people 13 years ago and have developed an alphabet and assembled a group of local pastors help with translation. After years of translation work, here is what this group of national translators are saying… You might be thinking: “Why are they translating the Bible when these men know English?” Well, there is a reason that these men were asked to be on the translation committee–because they knew both Oroko and English and thus could have insight into the local language and…

Remarkable Answer to Prayer: Missionary is Healed!

You will see pictured above Desma and Barry Abbott and family. They are currently serving in a the jungle in Southern Cameroon among the Baka people. We spent a few days with them while we were in Cameroon and really grew to enjoy respect them in very short time. Which is why we were very sad to hear that Desma grown very ill. My understanding is that she has had difficulties with her health for a very long time, but she just continued to grow worse and worse until she was at only about 20% strength. On Sunday, July 17th…

We’re Back!

We thank the Lord for bringing us back from Cameroon safely and in good health. Our visit could not have gone better. In fact, it went so well that we left almost in tears knowing that it will be at least two and a half years before we can return. Our logical reasons for choosing to go to Cameroon have now turned into deep affection for our fellow missionaries, for those who are without Christ, for the state of the church in Cameroon, and for the pleas of many different people groups begging us to translate the Bible for them….

Off to Cameroon, October 13th – November 3rd!

By way of background, Dave and I are appointees with the mission organization World Team (http://www.worldteam.org/) and our goal is to translate the Bible from Genesis to Revelation for a language that does not yet have it. There are over 200 languages in Cameroon, Africa so we are planning to spend the rest of our lives translating one such language. In October, we will be meeting the missionaries with whom we hope to work. They are kind enough to take us to the people groups that we are interested in translating for. They put together a list of their top…
